The first criterion is abrasion resistance, measured in Martindale cycles. For domestic furniture 25,000–30,000 is enough; for hotels, restaurants or offices, look for codes above 80,000 cycles.
The second is colorfastness. If the sofa sits near a window, lightfastness should be at least grade 5 — otherwise the sun-facing side will fade within a year or two.
The third is fibre content. Polyester is durable and affordable, viscose adds lustre, cotton and linen breathe naturally but crease sooner. Most good upholstery fabrics blend them.
Finally, width: a 280 cm width dramatically reduces cutting waste on large furniture. Match your cutting plan to the fabric width before ordering.
